May 7: Shooting Range

Eric and Nicoline wake up early again and go down through the French Quarter to get some breakfast. They watch the people go by while they sip on their coffee and eat their hot breakfast fare.

Frank joins them at the breakfast but Mark and Jenny are still asleep when they get back. However, we had all agreed to get started today no later than eleven so the youngest two members of our party have to get up as well.

The main thing for today is a visit to the St. Bernard Indoor Shooting Center. Not a typical New Orleans thing to do maybe, but Nicoline has long wanted to try out shooting guns, and both Frank and Mark were all for this event. So the shooting range it was. We all get to try a variety of different weapons.

I’m sure the Credo credit card people will be surprised to see that charge at a place that is full of NRA propaganda as one of the first major purchases :-D—Nicoline

Mark and I were the “experienced instructors” for the group. I use the term experienced lightly.—Frank

Frank made some videos with his cellphone. One where Mark is shooting and one where Frank is shooting. The files are quite big and may be sideways. Frank managed to capture the muzzle flash with his cellpone camera when Mark was shooting.

Jenny is maybe not quite that convinced that this is all that much fun, and Nicoline and Eric also get bored with it pretty soon. Not so much Frank and Mark, though.

Lunch is at the St. James Cheese Company, which turns out to be an excellent idea. We end up taking a bit of the long way to get there, due to Eric having missed one step when he copied the directions from Google, so we get to cross the Mississippi and then go through an industrial area. But we get there in the end and we all feel it’s worth the wait.

While Frank, Mark and Jenny go shopping after lunch, Eric and Nicoline return to the condo. We got this condo through airbnb, and it turned out to be really nice. There is an off-street parking spot for us in front of a gate. The gate leads into an alley with doors to multiple apartments. Inside, the kitchen has a fridge, microwave and oven. The living room has a big couch and a huge TV. The two bedrooms have a queen-size bed each. The only disadvantage is that there is a second floor of condos, so in the morning and evening we hear people walking around upstairs.

When Eric and Nicoline are rested and get to Louis Armstrong park, there is some event going on with plenty of food stands and music

Jenny and I also took a walk in the park that afternoon, although not at the same time as Mom and Dad. During our stroll, we came across a mother duck with three ducklings. The mother was teaching the babies how to get in and out of pools, using the fountain nozzles as examples. Unfortunately for the ducklings, the fountain suddenly started and the ducklings were not prepared. After some frantic paddling and a timely rescue by the mother duck, all four were reunited happily, having learned a valuable lesson.—Mark

We all meet up again at the Crescent City Brewhouse for dinner and a drink.

After dinner, we take our time returning to the condo, stopping at Jackson Park to watch a magician do his show. Then it’s time for all of us to go to sleep.
